We had a few problems gaining access to the web so here's a brief update of the last few days.
As part of our out reach we visited a residiential home, Burrows Home for the Aged. Opportunity to show pastoral concern for some of the people there.
After all the hard work, Friday afternoon was planned as beach time. However nobody planned the weather. There was a huge down pour whilst we were at the beach. That didn't stop the hardy Brits. We went swimming anyway. It was fab watching the rain bounce off the waves of the sea. Tom particularly liked the waves. It was warmer staying in the water than standing on the beach so most of us just stayed swimming. It cleared up just in time to get a bite to eat before heading for our homestays.
Friday evening was an opportunity to meet the young people of the churches here in Grand Bahama were we had fun and games in the dark as there was a power cut!
Saturday started early at 6:00am with a four hour prayer and fasting meeting. This was an opportunity to pray for the beginning of the church year.
After a rest, we went to see the dolphins and we were lucky that the trainers came out to give us an informal show. A highlight for many of the group. The evening was spent at Taino Beach resort both on the beach and in the pool.
Sunday morning was church. I assisted at both the 7am and the 10am service whilst some of the youths read prayers and readings just at the 10am service. Mandy gave her powerful testimony. After a rest in the afternoon we led a circuit youth service focused on 'New beginnings' as many here are going back to school this week.
Yesterday was our last full day here on the islands. We had a tour of the Rand nature reserve in which we saw some turtles. Sister Winter treated the group to lunch at a nice restaurant called Ruby Swiss. We had an hour or so doing our final shopping before going to the ice cream palour. Our final evening was spent at the bowling alley. I got the high score (104).
And finally we are just waiting to go to the airport. We've been monitoring tropical storm Hanna. Hanna has slowed down and we are told that we should be able to leave the Bahamas before the storm strikes.
There are mixed feelings in the group. Looking forward to going home but also saddend that we are leaving; leaving some lovely people who have become our friends.
Please pray for our safe return back to the UK. See you soon.
God bless
Al

Back to school!
Wednesday and Thursday we have been working at St Paul's Methodist College, picking litter, clearing broken concrete slabs (hurricane damage) and relaying slabs. We also swept, hosed and painted the main pathway into the school. The team suffered in the heat. Unlike our similar work in Andros, we were in direct sunshine and working longer hours. We all struggled with the heat and are pleased that we are onto different work tomorrow. We have to say though that we did a good job. "What a difference it makes' we heard as people admired our work. Great I thought, we had come wanting to make a difference and here we were hearing people comment on it. It was very encouraging.
Wed night we attended different prayer meetings, depending on the church that our home stay hosts attend.
Tonight (Thurs night) we are sewing in a craft session, making things _ I realised I might be ruinging surprises if I say any more at this stage! Our thanks tpo Sister Dorothy Goldsmith and Sister Martha, for their patience, teaching and encouragement. The lesson was meant to finish at 7.30pm and here we still are at just after 9pm still sewing!
Our very great excitement tonight is that tomorrow afternoon we are going to watch the dolphins. Swimming with the dolphins is not possible for insurance reasons, however, our kind hosts have managed to organise a visit for us. The wild dolphins are trained to come into the area where we will be standing and viewing. Everyone is very excited. Hopefully we can get online tomorrow night and tell you all about it.
Future plans include conducting and sharing the sunday services, helping with Urban renewal in their surveys of abandoned cars, visiting an Old Folks Home, Prayer and Fasting on Saturday morning and time with the young people here in a social event. So much more to do. The Lord continues to bless us richly.

Time to spare - Bahamas Air
It was an early start today! We had to check in at 6:30 for the next stage of our trip to Grand Bahama. We had to get the internal flight to Nassau then wait again for the next flight to Free Port. The first plane was so small (19 total passengers) we say some of the bags being left behind, we prayed they weren't ours! Thankfull when we got to Nassau our prayers were answered.
We were welcomed again so warmly with some lunch ready and met Renae. She had organised a tour of Freeport for us by the ministry of Tourism. It is interesting that Free Port has only really been established for 50 years, a Bahamian New Town. Total different to the new town I was brought up in.
We met our homestays and everyone seems really comtent.
We were so tired that nobody felt up to the evening prayer meeting and hence we all rested in preparation for another, hot and busy day.
Please pray for a blessed time here in Grand Bahama.

last day on Andros!
We had a tour of North Andros by cars. It included Red Bay where the local fishermen go sponge fishing. It was beautiful! We also saw a blue hole which is a deep deep sea water filled hole in the land. The bottom is not reached. No-one knows the depth of them, but if you kept going down they would lead you to the sea. We discovered the dark colour was not related to the murkiness of the water, on the contrary, when we threw a stone in you could watch a stone descend for several seconds to quite a depth.
We also visited Morgans Cave- a pirate cave, but Al was disappointed that there was no treasure, just a few crabs! There are a huge variety of land crabs and soldier crabs and the ground was moving beneath our feet with soldier crabs in a variety of borrowed shells!
We visited Lowe Sound and bought some lovely local basketware.
In the afternoon we visited Sister Verne and family to say our good-byes and to see the final finish in the house. It looked lovely and we were thrilled to have been a part of such a good outreach project.
In the evening we enjoyed a final farewell meal with Revs Stacia and Mark Christmas at Sister Angie's Poop deck. The food was delicious and the company was marvelous. It seems sad to leave Andros. The time here has really flown by. Onto new adventures tomorrow.

Junkanoo fun - church style!
What a day for church services! In the morning the team divided into 2 groups and attended the other churches they hadn't attended last week. Alistair preached at Stafford Creek and Stanyard creek. The other group went to Nicholl's Town and enjoyed Rev Stacia preach.
After a relaxing lunchtime and early afternoon where some of us took the opportunity to sleep, we spent a couple of hours preparing for our contributions to the evening circuit youth service.
At 7pm Junkanoo fun -church style started. We shared our cultures with each other. Revs mark & Stacia spoke about the culture of St Kitts and Nevis, our team spoke of the culture of Liverpool and the UK, and the Bahamian young people gave us a crab dance about crabbing with a live crab. It was fantastic! Both teams spoke of their exchange experiences, and then we taught each other something from our cultures. Rev Stacia taught us 'Stark in me lan'' meaning 'Goat in my land', Alistair & Caitlin led the singing of 'In my Liverpool Home' and the Bahamian young people led Junkanoo fun! There were 3 drummers and cow bells and dancing. It was amazing. Afterwards the Liverpool team were invited to have a go. Chris picked up the biggest drum and was taught the rhythm, which he quickly picked up. Rae & Tom also had drums and Al picked up the cow bells and went full out with the dance as well. 'Go Rev, go!' was the shout from Mary and friends. We had a marvellous time.
We rounded the evening off with card games at the Manse. Tomorrow we get a lie in. We meet at 11am. Sweet dreamzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Sat(down) day
Well this was going to be our day off but as we are so dedicated and there was still work to finish off at the house we headed out and got out the paintbrushes again, we also had some rollers one of which was slightly deformed and whoever used it ended up with a shower of paint! to the point the lady of the house asked did we have any on the walls :p it was all good though and washed off fairly easy. The kids also lost their shyness in the last few days and have been coming out their shells brilliantly, to the point they are so eager to get involved they were squabbling over paint brushes. Think they got more painty than us but i assure you its only coz they worked hard. The whole team did nothing but work and were all deadly serious (can't leep staught face :p)........well mostly! The rooms looked fab by the end of it and you could really see a difference both inside and out, got some pictures so they will be included in the talks when we get back. We then headed back to manse and again had some sarnies and then got ready for beach. We then headed to different beach than usual, it was less salty than the other one, same clear water, still good for goggling although not as many fish, slightly more rubbish in the water but by a port so not suprising, good fun and had shower 'facilities' for rinsing off that sand that gets everywhere.
We also watched some films at manse throughout the day, finshed Pocahontas and then watched Miss Congeniality later that night. Good fun although we were very tired! Everyone was gald to get to bed.
Hopefully someone else fill you in on today, change of person always good :P

FRYday :P ooh we are struggling for witty titles :P
well lets update you on friday. We returned to do outreach work at the house. We started painting today :) the paint made the rooms look so much brighter and gave it a warm feeling inside although with teh weather outside no warm feeling was needed!! Weather was roasting again today (hence title :p) Everyone got stuck in though inside and outside, someone came to lay the lino aswell which looked fab. We then postponed a tour of the Island had some sarnies for lunch and grabbed the beach stuff!! We got there and again proceeded to launch ourselves in the water, only staying long enough on beach to put suncream on! Had a fab time in the water and Tom who came as non swimmer is starting to swim like a fish its great to see and is growing in confidence in the water, he even went goggling (like snorkelling but without snorkel) to look at some fish!! We saw a multitude of fish again, purple and yellow ones, what we think is snapper, silver angel/butterfly fish, tiny electric blue ones, silvery ones (diff from angel fish). Saw loads of different coral and weed stuff too which was cool, there is a bright green 'rock' which is brain coral and has the convolutions like the surface of the brain (hence name). After couple of hours at beach we headed back to manse cleaned up and then headed to nearby church for a craft evening. The lads were given the choice of what they wanted to learn to make a bag or a doll :p they chose the bag suprisingly (hehe) so we seperated into 2 groups and learnt a local craft, after craft we had hamburgers/veggieburgers for tea and headed back to manse where some of the gang put pocahontos (cant spell) on whilst others of us headed home for a well needed rest.
Saturday came soon enough for all of us though, fill you in above

Thirst-day hahahahaha.....
well it may not be thursday but we havnt had chance to update the blog for ages. Anyway, today (imagine its thursday :) we went on the grand tour of the androsia factory. it was amazing to see how the process was carried out. the tour guide was the one in charge of hand-carving each print out of styro-foam. we also found out that the whole factory consists of about 14 people! who do everything from colouring to sewing. there are only 2 sewers in the whole place. most people also purchased a few items from the sho, but i wont give away any souverner suprise.
After a relaxing afternoon, we went to our last bible school *sob*. the kids were great, if not a handful! anyway we were all looking forward to friday since the beach was mentioned!

Another Hot Hot Day!
Wednesday 20th August
Today we again were scrub clearing at Sister Vernes house again, this time we burned all the wood and garden waste and started clearing rooms inside to lay lino down on Friday, Was a very hot day today with no break of rain for a change! We then rested in the heat and played cardgames, hair braiding (a running theme) and generally cooled down. In the evening we had a very successful Vacation Bible School with over 30 children again, the under 8's studyed Noah, and the Over 8s Daniel and the lions den. We had a show from the older ones with some very loud roaring!
Please pray for all those receiving GCSE results on thursday and that communications get through.

Hot, scorchy long day!
Tuesday 19th August
Today we continued with our scrub clearing, clearing alot of rubbish from the yard, sweeping up leaves, its very satisfying seeing the difference.
We then chilled out in the afternoon, it rained so no swimming!
In the evening we had another bible school where both groups were looking at putting others first, the younger group looking at feeding of the five thousand and the older looked at how bees are selfless to protect the hive (there is a link).
Very enthusiastic singing from all corners!
It was also Al and Sarahs 19th wedding anniversary (which they both forgot about) so we had a team treat of Ice Cream and gifts from the team to them.

Scrub Clearing and Vacation Bible School
Monday 18th Aug
A super busy day today! We started at 9:30am, we went to a church members house to do some clearing of the house and yard. Im not sure anyone expected the huge amount of work we had before us. We spent two hours clearing a huge yard where we found, laptops, a rusty truck engine, a sofa, and lots more. We also set to with Machetes, chopping down banana trees, coconut trees and anything that stayed still long enough for the boys (and a few girls) to hack!
We cleared alot of the yard and made some very impressive piles for a fire and rubbish. We then had lunch at the manse and changed into more appropriate clothes. After some prep time we went to run a Vacation Bible School, we were expecting between 10 and 20 children so imagine our surprise when 38 descended upon us!
It was a great time of singing, drawing and colouring and learning about God.
We then had a team meeting and then it was definately time for bed!!
We have a busy week ahead of us so pray we all keep our energy level up!

SAND, SEA ad SUNday :P
Well Sunday is nearly over so we thought we'd update you on our day.
We split into two teams for church today, 2 services each. Sarah, Mandy, Katy, Chris and Revd Stacia went to Stanyard Creek and Stafford Creek. Al, Rev.d Mark, Caitlin, Tom, Tim, and Roo went to Nicholl's Town and Mastic Point where Rae and Ruth joined the rest team at Mastic Point so got off lightly with only 1 service.
Sarah was Preaching at Stanyard Creek and did fabulously!! only 2 locals turned up though which made it very personal intimate service. She preached on Praying like Jesus and gave a brilliant insight into how, why, where, when and what Jesus prayed, giving those who heard it great insight into the spiritual life of Jesus in a way that we hadn't heard before. Mandy was preaching at Stafford Creek to a congregation of 4 locals, we all sang out to God. Mandy preached on disciples and why people don't become disciples and how God called her. It was a great sermon and she summarised the message in poetry! She really needs to publish her poems - you should hear her!
We all did Sunday lunch Andros style each at their home stay. Sarah, Al and Rachael had craw fish!!! After an afternoon rest we gathered for swimming (a long awaited reward for hard work). The beach is just ten minutes walk and it only took a few seconds before everyone was in the water. The water is warm and clear; it provides a great environment for diving under the waves to observe the fish. Even in the shallows there are are plenty of fish to swim with. Mandy came back with a baby conch (which she returned to the sea I add) and with Chris an underwater video of fish.
Back to home stays for a good nights sleep in preparation of our outreach tomorrow morning.

Hello Andros - brace yourselves!
Saturday 16th August
So you know the saying early to bed early to rise ... that didnt quite work. We were departing from Nassau for Andros at 8am (check in at 7am) and for one I was still in bed when Rose came to pick me up! Sarah and Al's car kept breaking down enroute and it was really touch and go to make the ferry!
The goodbye was emotional many tears mainly from Rose! After our departure the ferry ride took just over two and a half hours. With an amazing encounter with flying fish (or birds the debates still rages.)
We were greeted by Rev Mark Christmas and taken to our respective home stays, after depositing our belongings we met at the Christmas' house and had lunch and a discussion about what we are doing. Today was really just a settling in to the relaxed style of Andros life, really really laid back!
The difference between the city life of Nassau and the sparseness of Andros is vast. It is a really nice change and we are all looking forward to our change in pace but still a packed programme.

Chill Out Day!?
Friday 15th August
So today was meant to be a rest day (HA!).
We met at Rev. Sykes office and agreed to change monies, post postcards (expect them within 7-10 working days) and meet at the Houses of Parliament at 11am.
When it was apparent that changing money on a friday just wasnt going to happen we decided to focus on post office duties and do money later in the day!
We visited the Houses of Parliament and were given a tour by the Chief Clark Mr Tynes. It was a very interesting and informative morning, we even got to have a gander at the Senate meeting room (never open to the public) and it was great to think that is where royals open sessions and we were in the same room!
We then had an amazing meeting with the British High Comissioner Mr Peter Young, the main man who will get people home if they get in trouble but that aint us. He was brilliant to talk and listen to, he had great insight into the inner workings of the Bahamas, the importance and priviledge of cultural exchanges and what we can learn from them. He really encouraged all the team to continue to learn from other cultures and the doors this experience will open for them in their future!
We then had a second attempt at banking and were successful! Had lunch on Bay St, even some experience of Conch Salad. Then back to Wesley for Vacation Bible School Prep in Andros next week. The theme is B.I.B.L.E Best Instructions Before Leaving Earth, what the bible teaches us and why it is a useful tool.
Our last meal with the folks at Wesley and a little emotional for some of the team and hosts.
We then went home to pack and get an early night (again with the HA!)
So quite a good 'rest day'.

Farewell to All Saints and AIDS Secretariat
Thursday 14th August
We all met up for our last visit to All Saints HIV/AIDS community, which was quite moving for a number of the team. Most of the team visited a number of the community and were really moved by their stories and huge amounts of faith regardless of the situation they now found themselves in. We thank God for Miss Moxey, Lillian, Lofton, Garvin, Sophie and many other members of the community.
We then had a quick lunch and went down to see the AIDS secretatiat. She gave us a very informative presentation about the situation of HIV/AIDS in the Bahamas. It was shocking to think that 3% of the population are infected with either HIV or AIDS. As of december 2007 11,200 people were known to be living with HIV/AIDS in the Bahamas. A positive statistic is that only 4 babies have been born infected in the last year. Which just shows the work that the Secretariat is doing, pushing regular testing and education about the disease.
We had another tasty meal at Wesley - please dont think any of us will be coming back thinner I dont think anyone will allow us to!

Weds 13th Aug
Today we all had to get up early to meet at the ferry port at 7am, we did a visit to Eleuthera, Spanish Wells (briefest of brief) and Harbour Island.
The ferry was about 1:40, with only a little seasickness from Sarah and Ruth (I personally hate ferries). Arrived in Spanish Wells and jumped on a water taxi to Eleuthera. We were met by a tour guide and bundled into a minibus. We visited Preachers Cave a milestone in the early Eleutheran adventurers, a ship was wrecked on Devils back bone (great name!) and travelled to the area where they discovered caves, they set up a preachers point and people came to hear them preach the gospel. It was amazing to see a genuine historical site that hadnt been commercialised so the atmosphere is incredible. A number of the team were struck by the peace and history of the place.
We then travelled down to the Glass Window Bridge which is a concrete bridge over the point where the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea meet. I cant really describe it but it was amazing to see the deep blue of the Atlantic on the left and the clear blue shallow waters of the Caribbean on the right.
Atlantic Side of the Bridge
Caribbean Side of the Bridge!
We then hopped on another water taxi to Harbour Island - I must just say at this point it was getting so so hot that we all required copious amounts of water on arrival! We had a walking tour of Harbour Island. We went to Wesley Methodist Church (not a part of the MCCA) where just outside was temperance square . We then walked up a hill (in stifling heat) to the famous pink sands beach where the sand is apparently pink, we tried but weren't convinced about the pinkness of it!
After lunch in a local restaurant we milled about and caught the ferry back to Nassau.
We returned to Wesley Methodist Church in Nassau for another tasty meal.
A busy, hot but very interesting day. One of the hosts joined us all day and we as a team really enjoyed playing with her children and getting to know them all better.

Kids fun at All Saints
Tuesday 12 August 2008
Today we put on a kids activity morning at All Saints. When we started ther we no kids in sight. We got the parachute out and children started to appear as if from nowhere. They ranged in age from 18 months to 15 years. They loved the parachute, we had them running underneath it, bouncing balls on top and trying to get them through the hole in the centre and playing cat and mouse.
Afterwards we made an All Saints banner of hand and foot prints with coloured paints on an old sheet. we hung this up in the chapel afterwards. There were piggy back lifts and running races. Al raced an 8 year old lad in bare feet, Mandy recorded it on her camera and re-played the action as the 8 year old raced ahead to the finish line! Basket ball was also enjoyed with the young lads and members of the team.

Thrift Shop -
This afternoon we cleared another bookshelf, organised some boxes, and sorted some clothes mainly it was too hot to do anything so we were a little lazy and bought stuff - bad shirts included.
Just going for another yummy meal!

All Saints Community
Monday 11July 2008
We visited All Saints for the first time. Rev Eddie gave us an introductory talk in the small chapel there and then took us all across to the huts to visit the residents. He introduced us in small groups of 3-4. We were all moved. The faith we found there was amazing. They live in such poor conditions, many of them (about 80%) are HIV positive and yet they all praise God. 'We must love one another' said one lady with her arms around Mandy & Al 'it doesn't matter if we are black or white'. 'Look up to God, not down. Give God the glory'. We were all touched. Everyone we visited had found God in their lives and were keen to share him with everyone they met. The group is keen to do something of value for the community and has decided to put on some children's activities for Tuesday.
In the afternoon half the group went to the Thrift shop ( a charity shop run by the church for the benefit of the local community which is very poor). We swept the shop, tidied books and dusted all around. Rae tried the various hat on - there was a great yellow number! We bought a Bahamas island shirt for Al, we all thought it would look great with his dog collar.
Evening meals have been at the locl churches and we are being treated to good home cooking. We have had rice and peas, snapper (with the heads on!), macaroni cheese, potato salad, colelaw and for pudding Guava Duff. When Rev eddie first told us of this, his favourite pudding, many of us misheard and thought he said 'Guava Duck', Ruth, however thought he said 'Half a Duck!'

Sunday 10th Aug
Well the team has been all churched out today I think!! We have all been to min of 3 services and some have been to maximum of 5! Everything went really well and the group was involved in different ways in different services. We still have the last group service to do which is open air and which we are leading with local youths. Al did FAB job preaching this morning at 2 services one of which was meant to be recorded but due to technical hitch it didnt work. We were in the Tribune (Bahamas paper) the other day with the photo of Govenor General think the leaders have a copy of the paper. Tom is presently getting his hair braided-properly after many more feeble braids by Mandy. He's getting it done by a true Bahamian!! Well we shall go and chill for now. Hope all is well in the UK and weather is bearable, we had mini tropical storm again today so pray for good weather for All Saints AIDs community over next few days.

Ministry of Tourism - wow what a day!
So today we had a touristy day with the Ministry for Tourism. Had various presentations from corperate package deals to the film commision (particularly loved the photos of Pirates of the Caribbean cast!!) Really interesting facts, figures etc.
After an amazing buffet at Crystal Palace buffet restaurant (chocolate cake very much enjoyed), we had a bus tour of the Island of Nassau, taking in the major resorts, and a fort overlooking the whole island - expect amazing piccies on our return.
Another great meal at Rhodes Memorial and plotting plans for tomorrow!

Boy it is hot!
Thankfully we arrived intact, only one piece of luggage missing (and it was a leaders), and we all know where Ruth keeps her mobile!!
As soon as you walk out of the air con. you realise how hot it is.
We ate tea at the church; snapper fish and peas and rice before moving to our home stays. After nearly 24 hours of travelling and little sleep everyone was ready for bed.
The accommodation is great and everyone seems to be really happy with their home stays, though it may take longer for everyone to get used to a lack of air con. at night.
The group met the Governor General today. It was my first time of meeting a head of state and I'm pleased that everyone behaved themselves impeccably. It was a gentle, down to earth guy sharing his words of wisdom with the group. We were aware of his influence on the Bahamas constitution and the raising the education standards of this small nation.
We've just been down the main tourist street in Nassau (Bay Street) and half the team are still there. Be prepared for gifts of straw bags, wooden animals and teeshirts.
Following 1 John 3:1 the team has been given the task of finding people of God in Bay Street.

The team would like to wish all friends and family a safe and happy month while we are away.
we ask for your continued prayers and know that we will be praying for you while we are away also.
The team prays that all those known to us have a happy, healthy month and that you keep in touch now and again. Email is by far the cheapest option!! We will have some limited access to emails when we update the blog. If you wish to leave general message for team or remark on the team blog (please don't comment on spelling :p ) then you can leave a comment in reply to each post and the team can access them.
All the best and see you in 30days

Final Preparations
Wow! We're nearly ready.
After another frantic day getting paper work in order the Lowe family have finally had chance to do that last bit of shopping, tropical trousers, emergency dental repair kit, gifts for our hosts. It's been really busy but we're just about there now.
Please continue to pray for us. Just over 48 hours before we leave home at 4 in the morning.

Wow this was a hard but fun 13 miles of walking. The walk consisted of a lot of singing and getting to know each other, 2 ice cream stops (well one was a toilet stop but there was also a shop so a few of us decided to make the most of it and buy an ice cream while we were there). The other ice cream stop was an ice cream van on one of the interlinking roads, I think everyone had on that time :) was very refreshing, we were all quite hot from the miles of walking then. The weather held up quite well with the occasional threat of rain and even a light shower if I remember correctly. All the 'young people' found that playing following the leader in what we can only assume was either a water or sewage pipe was a great way to pass the time and resulted in us practicing our risk assessment skills . We finally reached the station that signalled the end of the 13miles (I think it was Hooton) had some prayer-time an then went our separate ways some limping more than others. Overall was a fab day and a good fundraiser.
